*Trigger Warning: Sexual Harassment
I have an experience of sexual harassment with a rapper that has a large following in the Chicago DIY music scene. I want to hold him accountable for his actions, since he won’t admit his actions to me after I confronted him to do so. I’d rather not go too into it, but it happened in September 2019 when I went to a Free Snacks show and the rapper talked to me a few times. It all seemed casual at first until at one point, later in the night he groped my backside and my butt while I was up against a wall, where no one could see. Then he asked me “What are your plans after the show?” I said I was going back to my place, with my friends who had come to the show with me. He told me that I should make an excuse so I could stay after the show to hang out with him. I told him that I had to take care of one of my friends because they had been drinking a lot that night. He then gave me a dirty look and said that's too bad and walked away. I've felt uncomfortable about this ever since it happened and I didn't know how to share it because he has so many friends/collaborators in the DIY Chicago music scene that stand behind him without questioning him. I've also seen him post on his social media about how he stands with survivors to try and keep a public image that he doesn't truly represent himself. There have been so many women coming forward lately with their experiences of harassment/assault that I've felt empowered to share my experience as well because the thought that he might have done this already to someone else or could do it again really scares me. I want to empower women to stand up for themselves when they are harassed!!
